GARRY KALUZNIAK SCHOLARSHIP & APPLICATION
Hockey Brandon is proud to partner with Allen & Bolack Excavating Ltd to offer the Garry Kaluzniak Scholarship. The staff take up an annual collection at Christmas and suggested putting it towards a scholarship to honour their boss, Garry Kaluzniak.
Garry grew up in Selkirk, Manitoba and played all his minor hockey there. The Selkirk Steelers were the local MJHL team and like all kids he hoped that someday he would be a Steeler. During the 1972-73 season Garry played for the Junior “B” Fisherman. The Fisherman won the Manitoba Junior “B” Championship that season with a stunning upset of the heavily favored Brandon Travellers. The following season Garry became a Steeler and lead the club in scoring. The Steelers went deep into the playoffs that season and eventually won the national Junior A title which at that time was known as the Centennial Cup (today it is the Royal Bank Cup). Garry set up the winning goal in a 1-0 overtime victory in Ottawa against the Smith Falls Bears. The following season he went to Denver University to play for the Pioneers on a hockey scholarship. Denver didn’t work out for him and after one term he returned to Manitoba to play for the Brandon Wheat Kings. He spent the remainder of the 74-75 season in Brandon as well as the entire 75-76 season. When his junior career was over he spent a season playing for the Bismarck Capitals in a fledgling semi pro league that included teams from Billings, Montana and Las Vegas Nevada. The league folded after that season and Garry decided to return to school. He spent a year at the University of Manitoba taking Engineering and playing for the Bisons. He later transferred to Brandon University and during the 1980-81 season was a member of the #1 ranked BU Bobcats. He was named a GPAC all-star that season. The team travelled to Finland that season to play in a series of exhibition games. Garry caught the eye of several European scouts, but nothing materialized that season. He returned to BU the following season and in late October landed a contract with Straubing in the German Division 2 League. He played pro in Europe for two seasons before returning home to Brandon. His last stint of competitive hockey was in the North Central Hockey League with a team from the Rossburn/Angusville area. After packing in the competitive game, he played some old-timers hockey with the OV Lightning. After playing, he made the next move to coaching. He coached minor hockey for several years, mentoring his son Johrn and nephew Mason in the game. Hockey Brandon benefitted for having Garry coach with various teams over the course of 10 seasons. He coached at all levels starting at Timbits, Novice, Atom, Atom A, Pee Wee, Pee Wee A, Bantam and Bantam AA. He didn’t only coach the boys, he coached a female Timbits when his daughter Keeghan played. In 2000 Hockey Brandon awarded Garry the Arnold Nichol Memorial Award. This annual award is presented to the most dedicated coach in the Timbits/Initiation program. Garry exemplifies the true definition of a dedicated coach. Over the years, families continued to comment that their son had his best year in hockey playing for Mr. Kaluzniak. Garry should be proud of his coaching career and the impact of team skills and life lessons he has passed on to over 150 players in his 10 years as a coach. Garry loved baseball as well; as a player and coach.
Hockey and a good education have been a huge part of Garry’s life and in his current role as Vice President of the Jacobson and Greiner Group of Companies. He still believes and practices the team spirit he learned at a young age while playing a sport that he loves.
